Disposition: Shu-Chi is particularly selfish, serving to meet his own needs. He devours souls to get close to others, but a downside to this is that he ends up taking personality and even physical traits of those he's absorbed, which can alter him regularly. In his present form, he loves to tease and draw attention to himself, acting cute even when he's being particularly demanding to get away with his antics. He knows what he wants and isn't afraid to push and shove to get it, even at the expense of coming off as annoying and rude. He can be particularly fussy, and even grumpy, when he doesn't get what he wants. He knows who and what he is and can become particularly cruel when this part comes to light. He will act like he doesn't care and will even say harsh things to push people away, knowing full well he shouldn't be forgiven for devouring souls. However, if someone shows him this forgiveness and impresses it upon him, he can show true remorse for his actions, and bend over backwards to try to make others happy, even at the cost of his own happiness and comfort.

      REVISIONS:

Shu-Chi's devouring of souls particularly affects him often taking on some, though not necessarily all, of the personality traits given to him. It is canonically stated that it took several devourings of souls, probably of mostly leopard cats, before he even gained consciousness. But the human Shu-Chi Yan is the first human soul he's devoured. He detected something particularly powerful in Liao and, as a desire to get closer to him to eventually consume his soul as well, devoured Shu-Chi Yan. This gave him a love for dance, a playful nature, and a deepfelt love for Liao. Even he cannot tell the difference of how he felt before he devoured Shu-Chi's soul, meaning he has no definition of what is him or what is separate. However, he does know that the devouring of souls is both divinely and humanely wrong, even if it's embedded into his being. The small portion of Hu Lin's soul gave him divinity, allowing him to break his cycle.

His cruelty is shown particularly when he knows his secret is out and believes that Liao will hate him for devouring souls at all, let alone the devouring of one such dear friend. He acts cold, aloof, and as harsh as possible, saying he even enjoyed it, knowing he's hurting Liao. He says he'll do it again and never stop, and tells him that he got close just so he could eat him, too. But the thing is that he's lying both to Liao and himself, feeling pain over hurting Liao and not being able to take it back, even if it was an unconscious decision to eat him before. The new him has feelings for Liao, and says he may have had them always. Though it takes Liao's forgiveness for the painful parts of him to breakdown as he cries over his wrongdoings.

Liao's forgiveness is surprising to all involved when it happens. Liao wishes for Shu-Chi to prove he can change and, even if he can't take everything back, to live in the human Shu-Chi's place to atone for it. Shu-Chi never expected forgiveness, and would have accepted a dark fate of death. Even when Liao says he forgives him, he screams at Liao to hate him because he won't stop it from happening again, and it is later revealed that he can't stop, which is where Hu Lin steps in to help. So, honestly, a person to forgive him for wronging him would have to believe in a better good or that forgiveness could do more than hatred could. There is no better reason, both in character or out of it, for someone to genuinely forgive him, except maybe for him to admit that he did strive to improve back home after his first forgiveness, showing he can change.

His remorse is shown particularly when it comes from dividing himself from the human Shu-Chi, but he can't remember a personality before him. Even though he is confused about which feelings are actually his, he does know that he loves Liao and that he genuinely regrets the fact that he took Shu-Chi's soul and having to continue devouring souls going forward. This shows that the human Shu-Chi probably gave him some manner of a conscience. He becomes sorrowful and apologetic afterwards, and eventually accepts his punishment - to live his life as Shu-Chi Yan. He continues to live his life the way he thinks Liao wants him to. He forces himself to become more accepting of circumstances and more generous with his kindness, which is where he starts to bend over backwards to make others happy.

Shu-Chi goes out of his way to make others happy thanks to Liao's influence. Liao accepts him as one of three boyfriends, and Shu-Chi sacrifices much of his time to make sure that the others get quality time with Liao as well, even if it's hurting himself to do it. It does not go unnoticed that, while he may be uncomfortable with what he's doing, he is genuinely trying to show he cares for Liao's happiness. He goes out of his way to make a deal with the head of the Yan household in order to obtain special necklaces for Liao's other spirit boyfriends to become tangible and visible (as humans) to the outside world so that he can spend all the time he wants with them in the physical world. However, he sacrifices any personal time for himself on the date, knowing he can spend all the physical time he wants with Liao, but the physical forms given to the other two will only last most of the day. When Liao confronts him on it, he tries to push it off like it was no big deal. However, he wears his emotions on his sleeve, and Liao has to coax him to promise not to sacrifice his happiness for the others, which is a promise that Shu-Chi finds extremely difficult to make.

Suitability: Shu-Chi will be able to suitably adjust to the idea of gems, powers obtained through them, and bonds. As a spirit/guardian deity himself, most of these abilities would make sense to him. Because he devours souls, and thus the physical and mental attributes to go with them, obtaining new parts such as the gem and transformations thereof would hardly be even mildly offputting. Here, he will leave his human shell behind, having a tangible form of his cat spirit that would otherwise only be visible to the spiritually sensitive, which will be the most peculiar part of this experience for him - he's not used to being seen by so many people for what he is. His reaction to the world around him might start off cold and distant, as he tries to settle into a new place and learn to make friends with more people than just his boyfriend and the other two cats that compete for that boyfriend's affections. But he can and will warm up quickly the more his CR grows.

      Condition upon arrival: Stable.

      Abilities:
SOUL DEVOURING: Yaoguai consume souls often. The more souls they devour, the more they gain consciousness, obtaining physical and emotional traits and even powers from souls. Souls devoured cannot be revived; however, it is possible for Shu-Chi to take only part of a soul, though it's generally only a good idea if the soul is capable of regeneration, like another deity. Stronger deities can resist this.

POSSESSION: Generally possible of all spirits with strong powers. If only possessed, when Shu-Chi leaves, it will be as if the person lived as themselves the entire time. Spirits gain memories of the soul to align with the vessel's path. However, vessels whose souls are devoured will become empty husks that will begin to wither away from the effects of death after the spirit departs.

SPIRIT ROADS: There are paths to get from one place to another on the astral plane that only spirits can take. Some of these paths may be guarded by other deities and may limit where certain spirits can go. Certain shrines, for example, may be closed off to lesser or dangerous spirits. As Shu-Chi is part deity, he has general access, but other guardians tend to keep a close eye on him due to his past.

OFFERINGS: Offerings are often made to spirits as thanks for their protection. In spirit form, the chi of these offerings is what is taken, leaving the physical offering behind. This allows spirits to taste what food would be like in the tangible world, or read a book they otherwise couldn't physically hold. Although Shu-Chi has a human shell he can use to experience these things in the physical world, he is still capable of accepting chi from offerings, too, making it easy to share with someone he cares about.

ENERGY: Energy can be used, but is certainly not limited to, to cause blasts, strikes of lightning, allow a person's untapped spiritual potential to develop, or even cause flowers to bloom. It can also be used to let a spirit hold physical things and allow others to see their form. However, energy to do most of these things requires a lot of energy. While a deity can do most of these things to a certain extent, having worshipers will enable them to be able to tap into more energy more often.

SPIRIT SENSE: Shu-Chi is able to detect other nearby spirits, and uses this ability to escape being captured from other guardian deities trying to bring him to justice.

MEMORY ALTERATION: Shu-Chi can cause others to change their feelings about him and even tamper with memories. This is a manipulation tactic to get a desired result. If a stronger deity is nearby, they can suppress this ability from being used.

DANCE: The original Shu-Chi was part of the Dance Club in college and was extremely talented at it. The absorption of his soul allows the cat deity to thrive in the same ability. Shu-Chi was considered one of the top dancers in the club.
